Living at IHÅ – Roomie chat

Nikolai, Villum, Elvira, and Johanne, students from class 56F, show what the rooms at IHÅ look like in this video. They also share their experiences of having a roommate. What are the benefits of living with a roommate? What can be challenging? And what advice would they give to future IHÅ students?

All rooms at the folk high school are the same and are equipped with two beds, meaning that students share a room with one roommate. Girls’ and boys’ rooms are distributed across the school’s eight residential corridors, located on either the upper or lower floors. Each room also includes a desk, a private bathroom, and plenty of storage space. And, just like the students in the video, you can decorate your room with photos, fairy lights, or anything else that helps make it feel like your home!

Our Amazing Facilities

At Idrætshøjskolen Aarhus, the setting is designed for an active and diverse folk high school experience. The campus features fitness facilities, football pitches, a dance studio, and music rooms. In addition, the school offers a beach volleyball court, sports halls, and a wide range of facilities for creative subjects and teaching. And then there’s Frank’s Gym. The name is no coincidence – our fitness teacher, Frank, spends so much time there that we eventually decided to put his name on the door.

We also use Aarhus as an extended classroom, making use of places such as the harbour at Aarhus Ø, Springcenter Aarhus, PadelPadel, and Pakhus77. At the same time, Bellevue Beach, Mollerup Forest, and Aarhus city centre are all just a short bike ride away, providing unique opportunities for activities, experiences, and community – both on and off campus.

Main Building

In the main building, you’ll find the heart of the school: the Lecture Hall, known simply as “FO” (Lecture Hall is “foredragssal” in Danish). This is where we gather several times a week for assemblies, community singing, and our Friday tradition, Go’ Weekend, featuring activities such as the Love Box and plenty of other fun events. Three times a day, we come together in the dining hall for our meals. Here, we enjoy delicious food prepared by the kitchen staff and the week’s kitchen team while sharing the day’s experiences around the tables. The teachers create table groups that change approximately every two weeks, giving everyone the chance to get to know one another. The main building is also the perfect place to relax and spend time together. Pull out a board game, settle in with a cup of coffee, or stop by the staff room or reception, where the door is always open for questions, support, or an informal chat.

The Courtyard

When you arrive at IHÅ, you step into our beautiful courtyard – the school’s natural gathering place. Here, you can relax on one of the wooden terraces, challenge your friends to a card game at the outdoor tables, or enjoy a round of Kubb, Spikeball, or football on the grass.

At the centre of it all stands a large oak tree, giving the courtyard its unique character throughout the year. In summer, it is lush and green, while autumn transforms it into a display of beautiful golden colours. When winter arrives, the tree is decorated with fairy lights that bring warmth and brightness to the darker months.

The courtyard is more than just a place to spend time – it is also where we come together for group sports, spontaneous activities, and cherished traditions, such as dancing Les Lanciers at the Gala-party.
