IHAA starts charity collection for Icelandic youth
We have a huge network of sport, culture and music personalities at Idraetshojskolen Aarhus.
Through the grapevine of the network travelled the story of 7 Icelandic pupils who were unable to stay at IHAA due to the financial situation in Iceland. Their stay here has suddenly become very expensive as it is paid in Danish kroner and the Icelandic krone has weakened dramatically.
The story was heard by a Danish financier abroad who has many business and cultural ties to Iceland.
He therefore asked IHAA to give an estimated cost for the 7 pupils to be able to continue their stay at the school. 100,000 Danish kroner was donated and because of this, 4 pupils can now stay at the school until June 2009. The other 3 had already booked their flights for the 1st November and were needed back home in order to help their families.
IHAA have now created a Facebook group under the name of “because we care” where all Icelandic students, artists, sports men and women, who experience financial hardship in Denmark, can make contact, tell their story, and apply for help in this acute situation.
We will need more people to sign up as donors for us to be able to help. We have some high expectations on that front, but as a school and its young people, we will also try our best to raise money through various methods such as charity events, etc.
All the money collected will go straight to those in need. There will be no admin costs as IHAA will undertake this. A local artist, the school’s chairman and the headmaster, together with 2 pupils will decide how the donations with be shared. The money will go from the donor direct to the person(s) in need without any expensive overheads.
